The story on this card
Shellenback opened 1967 on the Pirates' roster and worked three scoreless relief outings in April before a stint back at Columbus, interrupted by a 17-day Marine Reserve commitment. Recalled to Pittsburgh in September, he made his first big-league start on the 25th and threw a complete-game 11-inning win over the Dodgers for his first major-league victory. Card #592, a high number from the set's seventh series, is his recognized rookie card, shared with Ron Willis. Left-handed pitcher out of Riverside, California, and nephew of career minor-league great Frank Shellenback; pitched parts of nine big-league seasons for four clubs from 1966 to 1977.
Card #592 is a Rookie Stars subset issue pairing Willis with Jim Shellenback, listing Willis with the Cardinals and Shellenback with the Pirates; it is a high number from the set's seventh print series and is recognized as Willis's rookie card. It arrived during his breakout year: after a shaky first half he was nearly untouchable after the All-Star break, finishing 6-5 with a 2.67 ERA and 10 saves in 65 appearances that ranked third in the National League, as the Cardinals won the pennant and beat the Red Sox in the World Series, where he pitched in all three Cardinals losses. A sidearm-throwing Cardinals reliever who helped anchor the bullpen on the 1967 and 1968 pennant winners, pitching in three World Series games each year before elbow trouble ended his career in 1970.
