About this card

This is one of the 43 Rookie Stars cards in the set, each pairing two prospects. Thirty-nine are titled by club; #569, #576, #587 and #592 carry a league title and cover two clubs each.

The story on this card

By 1967 Jackson had stuck with the Phillies for good, working as a starter behind an aging rotation that still included Jim Bunning and Chris Short. His card, number 402, appears in print series 5 as a Rookie Stars slot shared with fellow Phillies pitching prospect Bill Wilson; it is Wilson's rookie card (Jackson's came on 1966 Topps #591), and it comes in two collectible states distinguished by whether the line beneath Wilson's statistics prints solid or broken. A left-handed reliever who logged eighteen big-league seasons across six teams, made the 1969 All-Star team as a Phillies starter, and won Game Seven of the 1979 World Series for the champion Pirates.

In 1967 Wilson was still working his way through the Phillies' farm system, in the sixth of what became seven minor league seasons before his 1969 debut. Topps included him on card #402, a Rookie Stars card from the set's fifth series shared with fellow prospect Grant Jackson, both pictured as Phillies farmhands. It is a recognized rookie card for Wilson. The card exists in two collectible print states distinguished by the stat line beneath Wilson's name on the card back. A Marshall University product who spent seven minor league seasons in the Phillies system before sticking as a Philadelphia relief pitcher from 1969 through 1973.
