About Dick Nen

Nen's 1967 Topps card, #403, from series 5, depicts him with the Washington Senators during what became his busiest big-league season. He appeared in a career-high 110 games in 1967, mostly at first base with a single game in the outfield, batting .218 with 6 home runs, 29 RBI and 21 runs.

Dick Nen was a left-handed first baseman who spent parts of six seasons in the majors with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Washington Senators and Chicago Cubs. Signed by the Dodgers in 1961, he led the Class C California League in home runs and RBI in his first pro season before two years at Triple-A Spokane. Recalled in September 1963 during the pennant race, he made his debut as a pinch hitter against Bob Gibson and, in the same game, hit a game-tying home run off Ron Taylor that helped the Dodgers sweep a crucial series with the Cardinals; the Dodgers went on to win the World Series that October, though Nen was not on the postseason roster. That home run was his only hit in a Dodgers uniform, and he was traded to Washington in December 1964, completing the deal that sent Frank Howard there and Claude Osteen to Los Angeles. Nen became a regular at first base for the Senators, spent 1968 with the Cubs, and closed his career back in Washington in 1970. He finished with 367 games played, 185 hits and 21 home runs. His son Robb Nen became a major league relief pitcher.
