About Tommie Agee

Coming off his Rookie of the Year season, Agee made his second straight All-Star team in 1967 but cooled considerably after the break, finishing at .234 with 52 RBIs as Chicago battled into the final week of a tight pennant race it ultimately lost. This 1967 Topps #455, from print series 5, carries the Topps All-Star Rookie trophy marking Agee's 1966 rookie-team selection.

Tommie Agee was a center fielder who broke in with Cleveland in 1962, moved to the Chicago White Sox in a three-team trade after the 1964 season, and became the everyday center fielder and leadoff man for the 1969 Miracle Mets. He grew up in Mobile, Alabama with future Mets teammate Cleon Jones, then signed with Cleveland after one season at Grambling State. In Chicago he won the 1966 AL Rookie of the Year award and a Gold Glove after homering more than 20 times and stealing more than 40 bases as a rookie, then made a second All-Star team in 1967. Traded to New York after the 1967 season, he led the 1969 Mets in homers and RBIs, homered twice in the NLCS sweep of Atlanta, then led off Game 3 of the World Series with a home run off Jim Palmer and made two legendary catches in that game as the Mets upset Baltimore. He closed his career with Houston and St. Louis and died in 2001.
