About Bert Campaneris

Three 1969 Topps cards carry Campaneris with Oakland: #423 in the fourth series from the Sporting News All-Star subset, #495 in the fifth series, and #556 in the sixth, a card he shares with teammates Sal Bando and Danny Cater. Between June 10 and June 21 he stole a base in twelve consecutive games, a major league record that still stands. He finished with 62 steals, though his four-year run as league leader ended when Seattle's Tommy Harper took 73. A fractured right index finger, suffered on a relay throw at second base on July 3, kept him out until July 25. He hit .260 for a club that went 88-74, nine games behind Minnesota.

Dagoberto Campaneris was born in Pueblo Nuevo, Cuba, on March 9, 1942, and drew major league attention in 1961 while playing for Cuba's national team. Kansas City scout Felix Delgado signed him to a contract carrying a $1,000 bonus payable only if he stayed with the organization for 60 days. He reached the Athletics on July 23, 1964, hitting a home run off Jim Kaat on the first pitch thrown to him and another in the seventh inning, joining the short list of players with two home runs in a debut game. Listed at 5-foot-10 and 160 pounds, he built his game on speed and range, led the American League in stolen bases six times, and finished with 649 steals. He was a six-time All-Star and the leadoff man for Oakland's three straight World Series winners from 1972 through 1974. Nineteen seasons ended with stops in Texas, California and New York, and he retired after 1983 with 2,249 hits, 79 home runs and a .259 average. He still holds Athletics franchise records at shortstop, and the club inducted him into the Athletics Hall of Fame in 2019. He is not a National Baseball Hall of Fame inductee.
