1969 Topps #608 Dick Simpson

About Dick Simpson
Card #608, a high-numbered series-7 issue, is Simpson's final Topps card, pictured as a Yankee after Houston traded him there for pitcher Dooley Womack on December 4, 1968. It reports his 1968 season split between two clubs: 26 games and 3 home runs with the Cardinals, then 59 more games and 3 more home runs with the Astros after a June trade. By the time the late-series card reached collectors, New York had already flipped him to the expansion Seattle Pilots for Jose Vidal, closing out his last big-league season.
Richard Charles Simpson, a 6-foot-4 outfielder born July 28, 1943, in Washington, D.C., signed with the Los Angeles Angels as a free agent out of Venice High School in 1961 and debuted in the majors on September 21, 1962, at age 19, pinch-hitting a single off Cleveland's Mudcat Grant. After three seasons with the Angels, he was traded to Baltimore for Norm Siebern in December 1965, then included a week later, with pitchers Milt Pappas and Jack Baldschun, in the trade that sent Frank Robinson from the Reds to the Orioles; Robinson's 1966 Triple Crown and World Series title for Baltimore made it one of baseball's most one-sided deals. Simpson played two seasons for the Reds, then bounced through the Cardinals, Astros, Yankees and Seattle Pilots in 1968 and 1969, closing a seven-season career with a .207 average, 15 home runs and 56 RBI in 288 games, without an All-Star or World Series appearance. He is the father of Colton Simpson, co-author of the memoir Inside the Crips.
