The story on this card
Card #646 is a high number from the seventh print series, pairing McGinn with fellow Expos pitcher Carl Morton in a Rookie Stars subset issue. McGinn had just come over from Cincinnati in the expansion draft, and this card catches him on the brink of a landmark day: on Opening Day 1969 he became the first relief pitcher to take the mound for the Expos and hit the first home run in franchise history, a solo shot off Tom Seaver. He went on to post a 7-10 record with a 3.94 ERA and six saves that season. Left-hander from Omaha and Notre Dame who broke in with Cincinnati, then became the first relief pitcher to take the mound for the expansion Montreal Expos.
Morton's rookie card appears in the seventh series of 1969 Topps as card #646, a high number shared with fellow Expos rookie Dan McGinn on a multi-player Rookie Stars card. The pictured season was Morton's first in the majors: he started the Expos' fourth game in franchise history, pitching nine scoreless innings before Montreal fell 1-0 in the 12th to the Cubs, and finished the year 0-3 with a 4.60 ERA over eight games. He won NL Rookie of the Year honors the following season. Right-hander who won the 1970 NL Rookie of the Year with Montreal, then anchored the Braves' rotation for four seasons, finishing 87-92 over an eight-year career.
