1970 Topps #495 Dave Morehead

About Dave Morehead
Morehead spent 1969 in the Kansas City bullpen, working 19 of his 21 games in relief and finishing 2-3 with a 5.73 ERA. Card #495 is a fifth-series issue that pictures him with the Royals. He started 17 of his 28 games in 1970 and went 3-5 with a 3.62 ERA.
David Michael Morehead was a right-handed pitcher who spent eight major league seasons (1963-1970), the first six with the Boston Red Sox and the last two with the expansion Kansas City Royals. Scout Ray Boone signed him off a 16-0 senior season at San Diego's Hoover High School, the school that also produced Ted Williams. He opened his career with a five-hit, 10-strikeout, 3-0 shutout of Washington on April 13, 1963. On September 16, 1965 he no-hit the Cleveland Indians 2-0, walking only Rocky Colavito. It was the last no-hitter by a Red Sox pitcher until Hideo Nomo's in 2001, and the last thrown at Fenway Park until Derek Lowe's in 2002. Arm ailments, starting with a shoulder injury early the following season, limited him to 33 games over the next three years. He finished 40-64 with a 4.15 ERA and 627 strikeouts in 819 1/3 innings, then earned a marketing degree from San Diego State University and built a business selling sporting goods to retail chains.
