1970 Topps #77 Frank Linzy

About Frank Linzy
Frank Linzy went 14-9 with a 3.64 ERA in 1969, appearing in 58 games, all in relief. He had posted ERAs of 1.43, 1.51 and 2.09 in 1965, 1967 and 1968. He also went 8-for-30 at the plate, a .267 average with one RBI. His 1970 Topps card, #77 in the first series, pictures him with the San Francisco Giants.
Frank Alfred Linzy, born September 15, 1940, in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma, pitched eleven big league seasons as a hard-throwing right-handed reliever, almost never starting a game. He debuted with the San Francisco Giants in 1963. Rather than a modern closer, he was a 1960s-style fireman whom the Giants used in the seventh or eighth inning, or whenever the opposition threatened late in a tight game, not only in the ninth. In 1965 and 1966 he was especially effective over the closing weeks of two heated pennant races, and in 1965 he finished 13th in the National League Most Valuable Player vote and third for Rookie of the Year. Linzy remained with San Francisco into 1970, then closed out his career with the St. Louis Cardinals, Milwaukee Brewers, and Philadelphia Phillies, retiring after the 1974 season. He finished 62-57 with a 2.85 earned run average and 111 saves.
