1970 Topps #540 Gary Peters

About Gary Peters
Peters went 10-15 with a 4.53 ERA for Chicago in 1969 after hurting his arm in spring training. That December, the White Sox traded him and Don Pavletich to Boston for Syd O'Brien and Billy Farmer. Boston sent Gerry Janeski to Chicago on March 9, 1970, as Farmer's replacement. Fifth-series card #540 listed the Red Sox.
Gary Peters pitched left-handed for the White Sox and Red Sox across 14 major league seasons from 1959 through 1972. Signed by Chicago in 1956, he pitched in the minors through 1962 before securing a place in the rotation. He won the American League Rookie of the Year award in 1963 after going 19-8 with a league-leading 2.33 ERA. He tied for the league lead with 20 wins in 1964 and won a second AL ERA title with a 1.98 mark in 1966. He was an All-Star in 1964 and 1967. Peters finished 124-103 with a 3.25 ERA and 1,420 strikeouts. As a batter, he hit .222 with 19 home runs, four of them as a pinch-hitter. He served as player representative with both clubs and in 1972 was an American League representative in the meetings that led to the first players' strike. Chicago named him to its All-Century Team in 2000. He died in 2023.
