1970 Topps #541 Bill Heath

About Bill Heath
Recalled by the Cubs on May 10, 1969, Bill Heath hit .156 in 27 games, mostly as a pinch hitter. On August 19 he started behind the plate in Ken Holtzman's no-hitter against Atlanta at Wrigley Field, and a foul ball broke his hand in the eighth inning, ending his major league career. His 1970 Topps card, #541, is in the fifth series. He played 37 games for Tacoma in 1970 before his June release.
Bill Heath was a left-handed hitting catcher from Yuba City, California, who starred at USC before turning pro with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1960. After several seasons developing in the minors alongside fellow prospect Pat Corrales, he reached the majors in 1965 with the Chicago White Sox, then played for the Houston Astros, Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs through 1969. In 1966 with Houston he hit .301 in a backup role behind John Bateman. Used mainly as a reserve catcher and pinch hitter, Heath finished his four-year major-league career with a .236 average and 47 hits in 112 games. He completed an accounting degree and established Barrington Financial Advisors in Houston in 1972.
