The story on this card

Doyle opened 1970 as Philadelphia's regular second baseman, one year after leading the Pacific Coast League in hits at Eugene, and played 112 games at .208. On April 18 his first-inning single was the only hit Mets pitcher Nolan Ryan allowed in a complete game. His #539 Rookie Stars card, from the fifth series, pairs him with Larry Bowa and is a rookie card for both men. Second baseman for the Phillies, Angels and Red Sox from 1970 to 1977. Larry Bowa's double-play partner in the minors and in Philadelphia, he hit .310 for Boston in 1975 and was the only player to hit safely in all seven World Series games.

Bowa reached Philadelphia after hitting .287 with 48 steals for Triple-A Eugene in 1969. He debuted on April 7, 1970, and singled off Ken Holtzman for his first hit on April 9. A mid-April 0-for-21 slump followed. He finished at .250 with 137 hits and 24 steals and placed third in Rookie of the Year voting. His fifth-series rookie card, 1970 Topps #539, paired him with Phillies teammate Dennis Doyle. Larry Bowa was the Phillies' switch-hitting shortstop from 1970 to 1981, a five-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner who later played for the Cubs and Mets, then managed the Padres and the Phillies.
