About Joe Verbanic

Verbanic returned to the Yankees in 1970 and won in relief against Baltimore on April 19. His final game came May 9 at Anaheim, five relief innings behind Mike Kekich in an 11-3 loss, and he finished 1-0 with a 4.60 ERA in seven games. His #416 card is from series 4.

Joe Verbanic was a right-handed pitcher from Washington, Pennsylvania, who signed with the Phillies out of Hopewell High School in 1961 and skipped Double-A to join their top affiliate, the Arkansas Travelers, in 1965, posting a 1.88 ERA over 67 innings. He debuted with Philadelphia in July 1966, then was traded to the Yankees that December for veteran Pedro Ramos. Inserted into New York's rotation in 1967, he won his first two starts, including a complete-game shutout of Washington, and finished 4-3 with a 2.80 ERA. He worked a career-high 40 games in 1968, throwing another shutout against the White Sox, but a rotator cuff injury wiped out his entire 1969 season. He returned briefly in 1970 before arm trouble ended his major league career. Verbanic later managed in the minors and settled in Eugene, Oregon, running a fire-protection business for decades.
