1970 Topps #708 Jose Santiago

About Jose Santiago
Santiago made eight appearances for Boston in 1970 and went 0-2 with a 10.32 ERA. He earned one save, struck out 8 batters in 11 1/3 innings and pitched his last major league game on July 6. His career closed at 163 appearances and a 34-29 record. His Red Sox card is #708, a high number from print series 7.
Jose Santiago was a right-handed pitcher from Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico, who threw an outstanding curveball across eight big-league seasons with the Kansas City Athletics and Boston Red Sox from 1963 to 1970. Originally scouted by the Giants, he went home when they had not paid the bonus promised in his contract, and he later signed with the Athletics for $15,000. He broke in against the reigning champion Yankees in September 1963 and worked mostly as a reliever in Kansas City before the Athletics sold his contract to Boston. In Boston he pitched on the 1967 pennant-winning staff, going 12-4, and started Game 1 of that year's World Series against Bob Gibson, homering in his first Series plate appearance. Elbow tendinitis that ended his 1968 season in July, followed by a torn elbow ligament and surgery in 1969, derailed the rest of his career. He later became a longtime play-by-play broadcaster and general manager for the Santurce Crabbers in Puerto Rico.
