About Kevin Collins

Collins opened 1970 with Triple-A Winnipeg before Montreal sold his contract to Detroit on August 2. On August 25 he hit a three-run pinch-hit homer off Ken Tatum in the second game at Tiger Stadium. His 1970 Topps #707, a seventh-series high number, still listed Montreal.

Kevin Collins was a Massachusetts-born infielder who signed with the New York Mets as an amateur free agent in 1964, straight out of Springfield Tech High School, where the left-handed-hitting shortstop led his club to two Western Massachusetts championships. He was 17 when he signed, and the first-year roster rules of the era pushed him onto the big-league club the following spring. A ruptured shoulder muscle suffered while warming up at Candlestick Park in April 1965 required surgery and delayed his debut until September. Collins spent parts of four seasons in New York, mostly at third base and second base. In June 1968 he collected three doubles in three at-bats off Juan Marichal, and that August in Houston a hard slide by Doug Rader broke his jaw and touched off a bench-clearing brawl. Traded to the Montreal Expos in June 1969 in the package that brought Donn Clendenon to the Mets, he gave the Expos their first pinch-hit home run, a three-run shot off Jim Bunning. His major-league career ended with the Detroit Tigers in 1970 and 1971, when he worked mainly as a pinch hitter and roomed with Gates Brown. He played in the minors until 1974, then retired for the automotive supply business. He batted .209 with 6 home runs over 201 games.
