About John McNamara

Charlie Finley promoted the 37-year-old McNamara from coach to manager of the Athletics on September 18, 1969, and in his first full season, 1970, Oakland went 89-73 and finished second, nine games behind Minnesota. Finley let him go after the year. His Topps card is #706, a solo manager card in the high-number seventh series, printed with the Athletics.

John McNamara was a big league manager and coach who spent his playing days in the minors. A Sacramento catcher who signed with the Cardinals in 1951, he hit .171 in 76 Pacific Coast League games in 1956 and turned to managing as player-manager at Lewiston, Idaho, in 1959. He won minor league pennants at Lewiston in 1961, Mobile in 1966 and Birmingham in 1967, handling prospects who became the Oakland dynasty, among them Reggie Jackson, Rollie Fingers, Sal Bando and Joe Rudi. He managed Oakland, San Diego, Cincinnati, California, Boston and Cleveland over 19 big league seasons between 1969 and 1996, going 1,160-1,233. His 1979 Reds won the National League West, and the 1986 Red Sox won the American League pennant, earning him Manager of the Year honors. That World Series against the Mets, lost in seven games after the Game 6 ground ball through Bill Buckner's legs, is what he is most famous for. He died on July 28, 2020, at his home in Tennessee.
