About Mike Fiore

Charlie Metro succeeded Joe Gordon as Royals manager for 1970, and Fiore said Metro disliked him from the start, a feeling he returned. Bob Oliver, who played 160 games, took over at first base. Fiore's #709 card, a seventh-series high number, shows him with Kansas City. He hit .164 in 66 games that season, 37 of them at first base, split between Kansas City and Boston.

Michael Gary Joseph Fiore, a Brooklyn native and Lafayette High School star, signed with the New York Mets in 1962 before Baltimore claimed him in the first-year player draft. A left-handed-hitting first baseman, he spent five years in the Orioles' system, twice losing time to military duty, before debuting in the majors in September 1968. Kansas City selected him in the expansion draft that fall, and he became the Royals' first-string first baseman in 1969, hitting the first home run in franchise history. He later played for Boston, St. Louis and San Diego, closing his major-league career in July 1972. Fiore then played Triple-A ball through 1978 and finished with a .991 career fielding percentage across all levels. He later spent about 20 years as a dispatcher in the school transportation department in Mineola, New York.
