1970 Topps #412 Larry Burchart

About Larry Burchart
Larry Burchart appears on #412 in the fourth series of the 1970 Topps set, pictured with Cleveland. The right-hander, listed at 6 ft 3 in and 205 lb, was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He debuted on April 10, 1969, and made his last major league appearance on September 30. That season he struck out 26 batters in 42 1/3 innings.
Larry Burchart was a right-handed pitcher out of Oklahoma State University, where he earned collegiate All-American honors and led the Cowboys to two College World Series appearances, finishing second in the nation in 1966 and fifth in 1967. Oklahoma State inducted him into its Athletics Hall of Fame in 1994. The Kansas City Athletics drafted him but could not sign him, and the Los Angeles Dodgers then took him in the third round of the secondary phase of the 1967 draft. Pitching for Tommy Lasorda's Ogden Dodgers, Burchart was the winning pitcher in the game that clinched the 1967 Pioneer League championship, and Lasorda called him one of the fiercest competitors he had coached. After two successful seasons in the Dodgers' farm system, he was taken by Cleveland in the 1968 Rule 5 draft, which meant the Indians had to keep him on their major league roster for 1969 or offer him back. He stuck, working 29 games in relief for Alvin Dark's club and finishing 0-2 with a 4.25 ERA. A collision at first base with Boston's George Scott tore muscles in his shoulder and put him on the disabled list. He pitched for Triple-A Wichita in 1970 and 1971 before leaving the game.
