About Bobby Floyd

The Royals acquired Fred Patek from Pittsburgh in December 1970 to play shortstop every day, and Floyd began 1971 at Omaha. He came up in late June, hit .118 through July and went back down, then returned when rosters expanded in September. He finished at .152 in 31 games, 15 of them at shortstop. His #646 is a sixth-series card listing him with the Kansas City Royals.

Robert Nathan Floyd was a utility infielder who spent seven big-league seasons filling in at shortstop, second and third base for the Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals. Born in Hawthorne, California, and raised in nearby El Segundo, he quarterbacked the high school football team as a senior and led El Segundo to a Southern California baseball championship from shortstop. After two years at UCLA he signed with the Orioles in August 1963, then worked through five seasons in Baltimore's farm system alongside Mark Belanger, Dave Johnson, Boog Powell and Jim Palmer before a September 1968 call-up. His lone full big-league season came in 1969, as a reserve on a 109-win pennant winner; he fielded the final out of Palmer's August 13 no-hitter and earned a full World Series share without playing in the Series. On June 15, 1970, Baltimore traded him to Kansas City for Moe Drabowsky, and he shuttled between Omaha and the Royals before his career closed in 1974 with a .219 average over 214 games. He then spent some 30 years coaching and managing, including big-league coaching stints with the New York Mets in 2001 and 2004.
