1971 Topps #647 Juan Pizarro

About Juan Pizarro
Pizarro pitched 12 games out of the Cubs bullpen in 1970 after Chicago acquired him from the Angels organization for Archie Reynolds, having gone 9-0 for the Hawaii Islanders. His #647 belongs to the sixth series. In 1971 he went 7-6 with a 3.46 ERA and 3 shutouts in 16 games. On September 11 he blanked the Cardinals at Wrigley Field, and in his next start he beat Tom Seaver and the Mets 1-0 at Shea Stadium.
Juan Roman Pizarro Cordova, a hard-throwing left-hander born February 7, 1937, in Santurce, Puerto Rico, signed with the Milwaukee Braves in February 1956 and reached the majors in May 1957 at twenty years old. He pitched in the World Series that fall for a Milwaukee club that beat the Yankees, and he pitched in the 1958 Series as well, which New York won. In December 1960 Milwaukee shipped him to Cincinnati, which passed him straight along to the Chicago White Sox. In Chicago he was an American League All-Star in 1963 and again in 1964, when he won 19 games for a club that finished one game behind New York. A torn triceps tendon in his pitching shoulder limited him in 1965, and from 1966 on he worked mainly in relief, closing out an 18-season, eight-team career in 1974. Nicknamed Terin as a boy, after neighborhood kids decided he looked like the hero of the comic strip Terry and the Pirates, he was also one of the most successful pitchers in Puerto Rican Winter League history and one of the first ten men inducted into the Puerto Rican Baseball Hall of Fame. He died in 2021.
