1971 Topps #203 Larry Gura

About Larry Gura
Gura debuted April 30, 1970, in Atlanta, coming in from the bullpen in the seventh inning with the bases loaded and two outs. In the eighth he faced Henry Aaron, Rico Carty and Orlando Cepeda, and he later recalled retiring Aaron and Cepeda. He pitched 20 games that year for the Cubs, 1-3 with a 3.79 ERA and one save. His card #203 came in the second series of 1971 with the Cubs, a rookie card on the heels of that first big-league season.
Larry Gura was a left-handed pitcher from Joliet, Illinois, who worked 16 major league seasons for the Chicago Cubs (1970-73 and 1985), New York Yankees (1974-75) and Kansas City Royals (1976-85). At Arizona State he won national championships and went 19-2 in 1969, the winningest season by a pitcher in college history, and the Cubs drafted him in the second round that June. He finished 126-97 with a 3.76 ERA, 16 shutouts and 14 saves. With Kansas City he won in double figures seven straight years from 1978 to 1984, 99 victories in all, and went 11-6 against his former Yankees in the regular season. His best year was 1980, when he was 18-10 with a 2.95 ERA, made the American League All-Star team and started Games 2 and 5 of the World Series. The Royals named him their pitcher of the year twice. Joliet inducted him into its inaugural hall of fame.
