1971 Topps #280 Fergie Jenkins

About Fergie Jenkins
On Opening Day 1971, April 6, Jenkins went all 10 innings to beat the Cardinals 2-1 at Wrigley Field. He was the National League Player of the Month for July at 6-1 with a 2.14 ERA. He completed 30 of 39 starts and hit six home runs, two of them in a September 1 win over Montreal. First-series League Leaders #70 (wins, with Bob Gibson and Gaylord Perry) and #72 (strikeouts, with Tom Seaver and Gibson) carry his name, and #280 in the third series is his own card.
Ferguson Arthur Jenkins of Chatham, Ontario, signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1962 and debuted out of the bullpen in September 1965. On April 21, 1966 the Phillies sent him to the Chicago Cubs with Adolfo Phillips and John Herrnstein for Larry Jackson and Bob Buhl, and the lanky right-hander had his first full season as a Cubs starter in 1967. Pitching in hitter-friendly Wrigley Field, he won 20 or more games in six straight seasons from 1967 through 1972, equaling Mordecai Brown's long-standing Cubs mark. He took the 1971 National League Cy Young Award after going 24-13 with 263 strikeouts against only 37 walks. He was an All-Star in 1967, 1971 and 1972, led the National League in wins in 1971 and the American League in wins in 1974, when a career-best 25 victories for the Texas Rangers brought him Comeback Player of the Year honors. He retired after the 1983 season with 284 wins, 3,192 strikeouts and 267 complete games, the first pitcher to reach 3,000 strikeouts while walking fewer than 1,000 batters. In 1991 he became the first Canadian elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
