1971 Topps #281 Danny Walton

About Danny Walton
Walton, a favorite of the Brewers fans in the County Stadium left-field bleachers, went to the Yankees on June 7, 1971, for Bobby Mitchell and Frank Tepedino. He hit .193 with three home runs and 11 RBI in 35 games split between the two clubs. Card #281, from the third series, lists him with Milwaukee.
Danny Walton was a right-handed power-hitting outfielder from Los Angeles who played parts of nine major league seasons between 1968 and 1980 for the Houston Astros, Seattle Pilots and Milwaukee Brewers, New York Yankees, Minnesota Twins, Los Angeles Dodgers and Texas Rangers. He hit .223 with 28 home runs in 297 games. A Bishop Amat Memorial High School product, he was a 10th-round Astros pick in 1965. The Sporting News named him its 1969 Minor League Player of the Year for Oklahoma City, where he hit .332 with 25 home runs and 119 RBI; Houston sent him and Sandy Valdespino to Seattle for Tommy Davis on August 31, 1969. Former minor league teammate Joe Simpson called him arguably the strongest man he ever played with. While playing winter ball in Puerto Rico he took a job as a sparring partner for boxer Joe King Roman and was fired after beating him up. He played in Japan for the Yokohama Taiyo Whales and later worked as a welder.
