About Mike Hershberger

The second-series #149 lists Hershberger with the Milwaukee Brewers, whose starting right fielder he became on April 22, 1970, batting third against the Angels after two weeks out with a pulled right groin muscle. Slipping as he ran for his car near the end of July, he pulled the left groin muscle, and he started 28 games all year, with 98 at-bats. The Brewers released him after the season, and he hit .260 in 74 games for the White Sox in 1971.

Norman Michael Hershberger, born October 9, 1939, in Massillon, Ohio, played eleven major-league seasons as a right-handed outfielder for the Chicago White Sox, the Kansas City and Oakland Athletics and the Milwaukee Brewers, closing out his career with a second stint in Chicago in 1971. He graduated from Massillon Washington High School, where he was a Tiger football halfback, and took a football scholarship to the University of Cincinnati before signing with the White Sox in 1959. He reached the majors on September 5, 1961, and was known for his defense and for one of the strongest outfield arms in the majors. He held a starting corner outfield job for seven straight years, 1962 through 1968, split between Chicago and the Athletics. Over 1,150 games he batted .252 with 900 hits. He hit 26 home runs and struck out 311 times in 3,572 at-bats. Massillon named him a Distinguished Citizen in 2021. He died in his hometown on July 1, 2012.
