1971 Topps #236 Bob Humphreys

About Bob Humphreys
Milwaukee signed Humphreys on June 15, 1970, and manager Dave Bristol told him to make the knuckleball his primary pitch. He earned three saves and a win in his first seven appearances for Milwaukee. His second win came in his last major league game, a start in a doubleheader against the White Sox, pitching five innings and allowing one run in a 3-2 victory. He finished 2-4 with a 2.92 ERA in 28 games across both clubs. His 1971 Topps card, #236, is a second-series issue with the Brewers.
Bob Humphreys was a right-handed relief pitcher who spent parts of nine major league seasons, 1962 to 1970, with the Tigers, Cardinals, Cubs, Senators and Brewers. A Hampden-Sydney College graduate born in Covington, Virginia, he broke into pro ball in 1958 and reached Detroit in 1962. With the 1964 St. Louis Cardinals, a midseason call-up from Triple-A became a 2-0, 2.53 ERA season out of the bullpen and a scoreless ninth inning in Game Six of the World Series, which the Cardinals won over the Yankees. After a season with the Cubs, he pitched for the Washington Senators from 1966 into 1970. He relied on a cutter learned from former Tigers teammate Frank Lary and, after an arm injury, a knuckleball. He finished 27-21 with 20 saves and a 3.36 ERA. After retiring he coached at Virginia Tech and worked as a minor league pitching instructor and coordinator for several organizations.
