1971 Topps #586 Dick Woodson

About Dick Woodson
Woodson spent 1971 in the minor leagues and returned to Minnesota in 1972 as a full-time starter. He had gone 7-5 in 1969 as both a starter and a reliever. His #586 is a Minnesota Twins card from the fifth series.
Dick Woodson was a 6-foot-5 right-hander who pitched for the Minnesota Twins in 1969, 1970 and 1972 through 1974, and for the New York Yankees in 1974. The Twins signed him as an amateur free agent before the 1965 season and he made the club out of spring training in 1969. He debuted on April 8 that year, relieving Joe Grzenda in the 12th inning at Kansas City and allowing one hit in a 4-3 loss. He pitched in the American League Championship Series in both 1969 and 1970, each a three-game sweep by Baltimore. In February 1974 he became the first player to use the new free agency clause, asking $30,000 against the Twins' $23,000, and the arbitrator sided with him. Minnesota traded him to the Yankees on May 4, 1974 for Mike Pazik, and he pitched his last major league game on July 8. He finished 34-32 with a 3.47 ERA in 137 games.
