1971 Topps #49 Don Money

About Don Money
Money hit the first home run at Veterans Stadium on April 10, 1971, a sixth-inning drive off Montreal's Bill Stoneman in Philadelphia's 4-1 win. He batted .223 that season while dividing his defensive work among third base, left field and second base. Hitting coach Wally Moses had tried to turn the pull hitter toward the opposite field. His first-series Topps card, #49, listed him with the Phillies.
Don Money played 16 major league seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers. Pittsburgh signed the infielder out of La Plata High School in Maryland in 1965 and traded him to Philadelphia in the 1967 deal for Jim Bunning. In 1974, Money set a major league record by playing 86 consecutive errorless games at third base within one season. He batted .261 for his career with 1,623 hits and 176 home runs. He drove in 729 runs and was an All-Star in 1974, 1976, 1977 and 1978. He reached the postseason with Milwaukee in 1981 and 1982, appearing in the Brewers' 7-game World Series loss to St. Louis in 1982. He entered the Brewers Walk of Fame in 2005.
