About this card

Every club has its own manager card this year, separate from its team card, and every one pictures the manager alone. Nine of the 24 managers are Hall of Famers: Bob Lemon (#91), Gil Hodges (#183), Red Schoendienst (#239), Ted Williams (#380), Earl Weaver (#477), Walt Alston (#567), Leo Durocher (#609), Sparky Anderson (#688) and Dick Williams (#714).

About Frank Lucchesi

The 1971 Phillies went 67-95 and finished last, with a league-low .233 team batting average. Lucchesi tried placing himself in the third-base coaching box and turning the bats backward in the rack to break the slump, and owner Bob Carpenter extended his contract a year, pointing to the Dodgers' one-year deals for Walter Alston. His #119 manager card carries the Phillies.

Frank Lucchesi spent four decades as a manager, nearly all of it in the minors. A San Francisco native, he played outfield in the lower minors from 1945 to 1957, batting .276 with 56 home runs in 1,149 games, and began managing in 1951 as player-manager of the Medford Rogues of the Class D Far West League. He joined the Phillies' system in 1956, won six pennants in 13 seasons and worked with Chris Short, Dick Allen, Fergie Jenkins and Larry Bowa on their way up. In the majors he managed the Phillies from 1970 to 1972, the Texas Rangers from 1975 to 1977 and the Cubs on an interim basis in 1987, finishing 316-399 overall. In spring training 1977 Rangers second baseman Lenny Randle struck him, leaving him with a concussion and a broken jaw; the Rangers fired him on June 21 at 31-31. In 1963, ejected while managing Triple-A Arkansas, he climbed a light tower to watch and, afraid of heights, was too scared to move when the umpire ordered him down. He died in Colleyville, Texas, on June 8, 2019.
