1971 Topps #92 Fred Wenz

About Fred Wenz
Wenz opened 1970 with the Phillies but was optioned to Eugene of the Pacific Coast League, where he worked 13 games at 1-1 with a 2.81 ERA before returning to Philadelphia. He was called up in early July and won games on July 19 and August 2. Of his 22 appearances for the Phillies, he closed 11. His 1971 Topps card, #92, pictures him with the Phillies.
Frederick Charles Wenz, a 6-foot-3, 214-pound right-hander from Bound Brook, New Jersey, spent nine years working through the minor leagues before reaching the majors. Signed by the San Francisco Giants out of Somerville High School in 1959, he had trouble finding the strike zone in the low minors before being released and picked up by the Red Sox organization. A move to the bullpen in the mid-1960s suited him better, and he earned the nickname Fireball in the Red Sox farm system by striking out more than a batter an inning. He debuted with Boston on June 4, 1968, striking out three Detroit Tigers in a scoreless inning. He pitched for the Red Sox in 1968 and 1969 and was sold to the Philadelphia Phillies after the 1969 season, closing out his three-year major-league career with Philadelphia in 1970. In 31 career relief appearances he went 3-0 with a 4.68 ERA. He struck out 38 batters in 42 1/3 innings and recorded one save. He also worked winters in the Puerto Rican league and later sold liquor in the offseason.
