1971 Topps #77 Mike Compton

About Mike Compton
Compton appears on #77 in the first series of the 1971 Topps set, his rookie card, printed with the Philadelphia Phillies. The card followed a 1970 season in which he caught in 40 games and collected 18 hits in 110 at-bats.
Mike Compton was a right-handed-hitting catcher whose entire major league career was the 1970 season with the Philadelphia Phillies. Born in Stamford, Texas, on August 15, 1944, he attended Sul Ross State University and signed with the Phillies as an amateur free agent in 1965. When Mike Ryan and Tim McCarver both had a hand broken in the same game on May 2, 1970, Compton was one of four catchers the Phillies used to cover the position. On May 15 he singled in the third inning against Tom Seaver, the only hit Seaver allowed in a 4-0 shutout. He appeared in 47 games and batted .164 with one home run and seven RBI before the Phillies sent him to Triple-A Eugene. He later managed and coached in the Phillies and Cincinnati Reds systems, served as a minor league catching coordinator, and is credited with inventing the Ball Hawg ball retrieval tool.
