1971 Topps #398 Howie Reed

About Howie Reed
Howie Reed's 1971 Topps card is #398, a fourth-series issue that shows him with the Expos. He made 43 appearances for Montreal in 1971, all of them in relief, and went 2-3 with a 4.29 ERA. His final big-league game came on September 17. He pitched one more year, 1972, in the minor leagues before retiring.
Howard Dean Reed was a right-handed pitcher from Dallas, Texas, who spent ten seasons in the majors between 1958 and 1971. Signed by the Kansas City Athletics, he debuted in relief in September 1958 and, in his first big-league start later that month, threw a complete-game win over Early Wynn. After brief stints with Kansas City in 1959 and 1960, he spent most of the early 1960s winning games for Spokane in the Pacific Coast League. The Dodgers acquired him in a trade for Ed Rakow in 1961 and recalled him in June 1964. He wore Roy Campanella's old No. 39 in Los Angeles and won a career-high seven games for the pennant-winning 1965 club before a May 1966 trade sent him to the Angels. After more minor league seasons in Houston's system, he pitched for the expansion Montreal Expos from 1969 to 1971, working mostly in relief. He appeared in 229 games and finished 26-29. He struck out 268 batters and saved nine games. After retiring he worked for Seagram's and in Expos broadcasting before returning to his farm in Texas. He died in 1984 at age 47.
