About Jerry Robertson

Jerry Robertson's 1970 consisted of 11 relief appearances for Detroit, 14 2/3 innings with a 3.68 ERA, the last on June 28 before an option to Toledo on July 1. The Tigers traded him to the New York Mets on March 30, 1971, and the Mets assigned him to Triple-A Tidewater. His 1971 Topps card, #651, from the sixth series, lists him with the Mets; he made no further major league appearances.

Jerry Robertson grew up on a farm near Winchester, Kansas, where baseball was not offered at his high school; he pitched summer ball in the Ban Johnson League before starring at Washburn University in Topeka. The St. Louis Cardinals took the right-hander in the 27th round of the 1965 draft, and he worked mostly as a reliever through the minors, leading his team in ERA in each of his first three pro seasons. Left unprotected in the October 1968 expansion draft, he was claimed by the Montreal Expos and made the club in 1969, pitching scoreless relief in the first game in franchise history before moving into the starting rotation that May. The Expos traded him to the Detroit Tigers that winter for pitcher Joe Sparma, and 1970 was his final major-league season; a broken finger and elbow trouble in the minors ended his playing career in 1971. Robertson later became a civic leader in Topeka, serving as executive director of the YMCA and as athletic director at Washburn University, where he was inducted into the school's athletic hall of fame in 1982.
