1971 Topps #650 Rich Allen

About Rich Allen
Allen batted .295 with 23 home runs and 90 RBI for Los Angeles in 1971. He played 67 games at third base and 60 in the outfield. Sixth-series Topps #650 listed him as Rich Allen. That year, Philadelphia rookie Willie Montanez hit 30 home runs, surpassing Allen's club rookie record. On December 2, the Dodgers traded Allen to the White Sox for Tommy John and Steve Huntz.
Richard Anthony "Dick" Allen played first base, third base and the outfield during fifteen major league seasons (1963-1977) with the Phillies, Cardinals, Dodgers, White Sox and Athletics. Philadelphia signed him out of Wampum, Pennsylvania, in 1960 for a reported $70,000. Although the Phillies called him Richie, family and friends knew him as Dick, and he asked writers to use that name. He won the 1964 National League Rookie of the Year award and the 1972 American League Most Valuable Player award with Chicago. A seven-time All-Star, he led his league in slugging percentage three times. In Philadelphia he faced racist abuse and objects thrown from the stands; he wore a batting helmet while fielding and became known as Crash. Allen finished with a .292 average and 351 home runs in 1,749 games. His career slugging percentage was .534, with a 156 OPS+. He died in 2020 and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2025.
