About Sal Campisi

After the 1970 season the Cardinals traded Campisi and infielder Jim Kennedy to Minnesota for Herman Hill and minor leaguer Bob Wissler; Hill drowned in Venezuela within weeks. Called up from Portland, Campisi worked six April games for the Twins, with a 4.15 ERA and no decision, and his last game was April 24. His #568 card, from the fifth series, is printed with the Minnesota Twins.

Sal Campisi was a right-handed reliever from Brooklyn who pitched 50 games in the majors, for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1969 and 1970 and the Minnesota Twins in 1971, going 3-2 with a 2.70 ERA and four saves. At Long Island University he went 12-1 with a 0.27 ERA in 1964, the lowest in the country that year, and signed with the Cardinals for an $8,500 bonus. In the minors he moved from starting to relief and won 36 and lost 8 across Double-A and Triple-A from 1967 to 1969. At Tulsa in 1969, under Warren Spahn, he went 13-2 with a 1.99 ERA and won the American Association's Allie Reynolds Award as its outstanding pitcher. He made his debut on August 15, 1969, and earned his first win on September 18 against the Pirates, in a game decided by Vada Pinson's walk-off homer. His slider broke like a spitball, which prompted the suggestion that his first name should be Saliva. Arm trouble ended his career in 1972, and he settled in St. Petersburg, Florida, and spent 20 years with General Telephone.
