The story on this card
Saunders's second big league game, on May 24, 1970, was his best. He relieved Mickey Lolich in the third inning and threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings against the Washington Senators, allowing three hits. He earned his only save on May 29 and his only win on June 10, both against Milwaukee. Card #423 is a fourth-series Rookie Stars card shared with Tim Marting, both shown with the Tigers, and is Saunders's rookie card. Dennis Saunders was a right-handed reliever from Alhambra, California, who pitched in eight games for the 1970 Detroit Tigers, debuting May 21 and finishing June 12 with a 3.21 ERA. He spent six seasons in the minors, through 1972.
Marting hit .278 in 118 games for Toledo in 1970, spending most of his defensive time at second base. He also appeared at shortstop and third base for Detroit's Triple-A International League club. Topps paired him with pitcher Dennis Saunders on Tigers Rookie Stars #423, Marting's rookie card. A first-round Detroit draft pick, Tim Marting played in the Tigers' farm system and spent three seasons with Toledo. He batted and threw right-handed and played several infield positions.
