1972 Topps #424 Bill Gogolewski

About Bill Gogolewski
The Rangers' first Texas season opened 13 days late because of the players' strike, and Gogolewski was hit for eight runs in 3 2/3 innings in his first start. He went 4-11 with a 4.24 ERA, but on September 12 he held the Angels hitless through 7 2/3 innings while Nolan Ryan struck out 15, and settled for a one-hit shutout. Topps placed him on #424, in the fourth series, with the Rangers.
Bill Gogolewski was a 6-foot-4 right-hander from Oshkosh, Wisconsin, who pitched six seasons for the Washington Senators and Texas Rangers, Cleveland and the Chicago White Sox, going 15-24 with a 4.02 ERA and 10 saves in 144 games. The Senators took him out of Oshkosh High School in the 18th round of the first amateur draft in 1965, after a junior year that included a no-hitter. National Guard duty and a sore elbow slowed his climb, and a slider he picked up in the spring of 1970 became his out pitch. That summer he won 14 games and struck out 146 for Pittsfield, leading or co-leading the Eastern League in both. He was the only unanimous all-star pick and made his major-league debut on September 3. From 1973 he worked almost entirely in relief. A back injury ended his career in 1975, and he later chaired the Oshkosh advisory park board.
