1972 Topps #760 Bill Mazeroski

About Bill Mazeroski
Mazeroski's 1971 shrank to 70 games, 46 of them at second base and 7 at third. He hit .254 with 1 home run and 16 RBI. He went 1 for 1 in the NLCS against San Francisco and 0 for 1 in the World Series win over Baltimore. His last regular-season hit came on July 23, 1972, a first-inning single in a 3-2 win over the Reds. Card #760 is a Pirates card from the sixth series.
William Stanley Mazeroski spent his entire 17-year career (1956-1972) at second base for the Pittsburgh Pirates, who signed him in 1954 out of high school in Tiltonsville, Ohio. Broadcaster Bob Prince took to calling him simply "The Glove," and the name fit: an All-Star in seven seasons and an eight-time Gold Glove winner, he turned 1,706 double plays, still the major league career record for a second baseman. He is remembered above all for one swing. Leading off the bottom of the ninth of Game 7 of the 1960 World Series with the score tied 9-9, he drove a Ralph Terry pitch over the left-field wall at Forbes Field to beat the New York Yankees. It remains the only walk-off home run to end a World Series in Game 7. He hit .320 in that Series and won the Babe Ruth Award for it. In 1971 he and Roberto Clemente, the last two men left from the 1960 club, took a second title from Baltimore. Mazeroski coached for the Pirates and the Seattle Mariners, saw his number 9 retired in 1987, and was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 2001, chosen for his glove more than his bat. He died February 20, 2026, in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, at 89.
