About Bob Moose

Bob Moose's 1971 alternated between rotation and bullpen: four starts, two relief outings, then nine starts from mid-May to early July that included three complete games and a three-hit shutout. He pitched in four postseason games, one against San Francisco in the NLCS and three against Baltimore in the World Series, with no decision in any. Still in his champagne-stained uniform, he was whisked away by helicopter to be best man at Bruce Kison's wedding. #647 is a fifth-series card printed with the Pirates.

Bob Moose was a right-handed pitcher who spent his entire ten-year major league career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, from 1967 through 1976. A product of Export, Pennsylvania, he broke in as a teenager and settled into the rotation the following year. His finest season came in 1969, when he went 14-3 with a 2.91 ERA and no-hit the eventual World Series champion New York Mets at Shea Stadium. Moose was part of Pirates teams that won five NL East titles between 1970 and 1975 and the 1971 World Series. In the deciding game of the 1972 NLCS, his wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth let George Foster score the run that sent Cincinnati to the World Series. A blood clot in his pitching shoulder required surgery in 1974 and cost him most of that season, but he returned to pitch through 1976. He finished his career 76-71 with a 3.50 ERA in 289 games. Moose died in a car accident in Martins Ferry, Ohio, on his 29th birthday.
