1972 Topps #407 Chuck Taylor

About Chuck Taylor
The Mets carried Taylor through most of 1972 and he pitched to a 5.52 ERA for them before the Brewers selected him off waivers in September. Eleven innings for Milwaukee at 1.54 brought his season ERA down to 4.43. He made 25 major league appearances that year and spent part of it in the minors as well, pitching in 26 games there with a 4.70 ERA. His #407 is a Mets card from the fourth series.
Chuck Taylor was a right-handed pitcher, mostly a reliever, who worked eight major league seasons for the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Mets, Milwaukee Brewers and Montreal Expos. A Tennessean who attended Bell Buckle High School and Middle Tennessee State University, he signed with the Cardinals in 1961, was traded to Houston in February 1964, and returned to St. Louis midway through 1965 with Hal Woodeshick in the deal that sent Mike Cuellar and Ron Taylor to the Astros. A season at Tulsa in which he started 34 games and went 18-7 with a 2.35 ERA earned him a roster spot at age 26. He debuted on May 27, 1969, relieving Ray Washburn, and gave up the winning run to Atlanta. After the Mets and Brewers in 1972 he was released in March 1973 and signed with Montreal, where he finished his career on October 3, 1976. He went 28-20 with a 3.07 ERA and 31 saves in 305 games. Taylor died in 2018.
