1972 Topps #473 Dan McGinn

About Dan McGinn
Dan McGinn opened 1971 at Triple-A Winnipeg, came back to Montreal and went 1-4 with a 5.96 ERA. His fourth-series card, #473, still lists the Expos, though they traded him to the Cubs before the 1972 season for Hector Torres and Hal Breeden. In Chicago he went 0-5 with a 5.89 ERA and four saves, and his last major league game came on October 3, 1972.
Dan McGinn was a left-handed pitcher from Omaha, Nebraska, who played quarterback and several other positions at Notre Dame while also pitching for the baseball team. Cincinnati drafted him in the secondary phase of the 1966 January draft, and he reached the majors with the Reds in 1968 after converting from starter to reliever. Left unprotected in the expansion draft, McGinn was selected by the Montreal Expos. On Opening Day 1969 he became the first relief pitcher to take the mound for the new franchise and hit the first home run in Expos history, off Tom Seaver. He spent three seasons with Montreal before a 1972 trade sent him to the Chicago Cubs, his final major league stop. Across five seasons with the Reds, Expos and Cubs he went 15-30 with a 5.11 ERA in 210 games. He later spent 24 years in sales and marketing for AT&T in Omaha.
