About this card

The story on this card

Baylor won an outfield job in 1972 after Baltimore traded Frank Robinson away. He hit .253 with 11 home runs and 38 RBI and was named to the Topps Rookie Major League All-Star Team. Topps #474, in the fourth series, shows three Orioles together in the Rookie Stars subset: Baylor, Roric Harrison and Johnny Oates. Don Baylor was a plate-crowding slugger with the Orioles, Athletics, Angels, Yankees, Red Sox and Twins who won the 1979 AL MVP Award with California, hit 338 home runs, and later managed the Colorado Rockies and Chicago Cubs.

Harrison shares card #474, a fourth-series Rookie Stars card, with Don Baylor and Johnny Oates, all three shown with the Baltimore Orioles; it is the rookie card for both Harrison and Oates. He made the 1972 club as a reliever because the four Baltimore starters had each won 20 games the year before. In 39 games he went 3-4 with a 2.30 ERA. He also recorded four saves and struck out 62 in 94 innings. Right-handed pitcher for the Orioles, Braves, Indians and Twins between 1972 and 1978. He made 70 starts in 140 major league games and recorded 10 saves.

Oates spent 1971 at Triple-A Rochester, hitting .277 in 114 games. He then got the bulk of the Orioles' catching work in 1972, appearing in 85 games and hitting .261 with four home runs while injuries limited Andy Etchebarren and Ellie Hendricks. His rookie card is #474, a fourth-series Rookie Stars card shared with Don Baylor and Roric Harrison, all three printed with Baltimore. Johnny Oates caught for the Orioles, Braves, Phillies, Dodgers and Yankees from 1970 to 1981, hitting .250 in 593 games. He later managed the Orioles and Rangers, and won the 1996 American League Manager of the Year award.
