1972 Topps #687 Del Unser

About Del Unser
Del Unser appeared in 132 games for Cleveland in 1972, working the outfield in 119 of them. He batted .238 with 1 home run and 17 RBI. His brother Larry, drafted by the Indians, played Class A ball in 1972 and 1973. On December 1, 1972, Cleveland sent Unser and minor league third baseman Terry Wedgewood to the Phillies for Oscar Gamble and Roger Freed. Topps listed him with the Indians as #687, in the sixth series.
Del Unser was a lefty-hitting outfielder who spent 15 seasons in the majors from 1968 to 1982, breaking in with the Washington Senators and finishing second in AL Rookie of the Year voting his first year. He later played for the Cleveland Indians, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets and Montreal Expos, moving among those clubs in a string of trades. Unser led the American League in triples in 1969 and finished his career with 1,799 games, 1,344 hits and 87 home runs. He played a part in the Phillies' 1980 World Series championship, driving in runs with pinch-hit doubles in Games 2 and 5 against the Kansas City Royals. Unser's father, Al Unser, played in the majors and also managed and scouted, and Del followed a similar path after his playing days, working for the Phillies as a coach, farm director and scout. His college play at Mississippi State earned him induction into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.
