About Dick Williams
Owner Charlie Finley brought Williams back for 1972, and the A's won the American League West by 5 1/2 games over the White Sox. They led the league with 134 home runs and 43 saves, then beat Detroit 2-1 in the deciding fifth game of the playoff. With Reggie Jackson out injured, Gene Tenace's home runs and Williams's maneuvering beat favored Cincinnati in a seven-game World Series, the franchise's first championship since 1930, when it played in Philadelphia. Williams's 1972 manager card is #137, a second-series number.
Richard Hirschfeld Williams played parts of 13 major-league seasons between 1951 and 1964, a well-traveled utility man for the Brooklyn Dodgers, Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians, Kansas City Athletics and Boston Red Sox. He finished with a .260 average, 70 home runs and 331 RBI. In the field he appeared in 456 games in the outfield, 257 at third base and 188 at first. A shoulder separation suffered on a diving catch in August 1952 permanently weakened his throwing arm. Boston released him in October 1964. He took over the Red Sox' Triple-A Toronto Maple Leafs and won Governors' Cup titles in 1965 and 1966. He then inherited a big-league club that had finished ninth in the ten-team American League and drove it to the 1967 'Impossible Dream' pennant, a race settled on the final weekend, before a seven-game World Series loss to St. Louis. In 21 seasons as a manager he won back-to-back World Series with the Oakland Athletics in 1972 and 1973 and a National League pennant with the 1984 San Diego Padres, finishing with 1,571 wins. The Veterans Committee elected him to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in December 2007; he was inducted in 2008.
