About Graig Nettles

Graig Nettles closed his three seasons in Cleveland with 150 games at third base in 1972. He batted .253 with 17 home runs and 70 RBI. A feud with manager Ken Aspromonte led the Indians to trade him, and on November 27, 1972, he and Jerry Moses went to the Yankees for John Ellis, Charlie Spikes, Rusty Torres and Jerry Kenney. His #590 is a fifth-series card showing him with the Indians.

Graig Nettles was a third baseman who played 22 major league seasons for the Twins, Indians, Yankees, Padres, Braves and Expos. He attended San Diego State on a basketball scholarship and played both basketball and baseball before Minnesota drafted him in the fourth round in 1965. He debuted in September 1967. Nettles won Gold Gloves in 1977 and 1978 and made six All-Star teams. His 37 home runs and 107 RBI in 1977 were career highs, and he played for the Yankees' World Series champions that year and in 1978. He was named ALCS MVP in 1981. He finished with a .248 average, 390 home runs and 1,314 RBI, setting the American League career home run record for third basemen. San Diego's Breitbard Hall of Fame inducted him in 1991.
