1972 Topps #594 Jim Beauchamp

About Jim Beauchamp
Beauchamp reached the Mets on October 18, 1971, in an eight-player trade that sent Art Shamsky to St. Louis. In 1972 he played sparingly, hitting .242 in 58 games with a career-high five home runs, three of them on August 21 and 22 against his old Astros. Card #594 is a fifth-series number showing him with New York.
James Edward Beauchamp was a power-hitting first baseman and outfielder from Vinita and Grove, Oklahoma, signed by the St. Louis Cardinals out of Oklahoma State in 1958 and named the 1963 Texas League MVP after hitting .337 with 31 home runs and 105 RBI for the Tulsa Oilers. Injuries, including a dislocated shoulder that damaged his throwing arm, slowed a career that stretched across ten major league seasons and five organizations: the Cardinals, Colt .45s/Astros, Braves, Reds and Mets. He appeared in the 1973 World Series with New York. After retiring as a player he spent decades as a minor league manager and as the Atlanta Braves' bench coach and outfield coordinator, putting 50 years in the game in all.
