About Jim Fregosi
Injuries, a broken thumb among them, held Fregosi to 101 games in his first season with the Mets. He hit .232 with five home runs and moved from shortstop to third base, where he played 85 games. He later admitted he had not helped matters by playing out of shape. "I was leading the good life and I loved it," he said. Card #115 has him with the California Angels, while #346 in the Boyhood Photos subset and #755 in the Traded subset have him with the Mets.
Jim Fregosi won 11 varsity letters at Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo before signing with the Boston Red Sox for a $20,000 bonus. The expansion Los Angeles Angels selected him after one Class-D season, and he debuted with them in September 1961. He became their regular shortstop and made six All-Star teams. On December 10, 1971, the Angels traded him to the Mets for four players: Nolan Ryan, Don Rose, Leroy Stanton and Francisco Estrada. Fregosi later played for Texas and Pittsburgh, finishing with 1,726 hits and a .265 average. As a manager, he led the Angels to their first postseason in 1979 and the Phillies to the 1993 National League pennant. He also managed the White Sox and Blue Jays. The Angels retired his number 11 in 1998.
