About Jim Perry
Perry finished 1971 at 17-17 with a 4.23 ERA in 270 innings for Minnesota. Topps issued two cards of him in 1972, #220 from the second series and #497 from the fourth, the latter in the Boyhood Photos of the Stars subset. At Williamston High School, he and younger brother Gaylord alternated between pitching and third base. Jim recalled that they once had nine shutouts in a row.
Jim Perry pitched for Cleveland, Minnesota, Detroit and Oakland during a 17-season major league career. A right-hander and switch-hitter, he won 215 games, struck out 1,576 batters and received the American League Cy Young Award. Cleveland scout Jim Gruzdis signed him while he was attending Campbell College. Perry advanced through North Platte, Fargo-Moorhead and Reading before making the Indians in 1959, when he finished second to Bob Allison in Rookie of the Year voting. After his playing career, he scouted for Oakland and signed catcher Terry Steinbach. He also worked for the telephone company DialNet in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Campbell named its baseball field for him in 2012.
