1972 Topps #737 Lenny Randle

About Lenny Randle
Texas opened its first season after the franchise left Washington, and Randle played 74 games, 65 of them at second base and 4 at shortstop, hitting .193 with 2 home runs. #737 is his rookie card, from the sixth series, and it lists him with the Rangers.
Lenny Randle was a switch-hitting infielder and outfielder who played 12 major league seasons, 1971 to 1982, for the Senators/Rangers franchise, the Mets, the Yankees, the Cubs and the Mariners. He captained the baseball and football teams at Centennial High School in Compton, played second base on Arizona State's 1969 NCAA championship team, and was taken 10th overall by Washington in the secondary phase of the June 1970 draft. He finished with 1,016 hits, 27 home runs and 156 steals in 1,138 games. On May 27, 1981, in the Kingdome, he got down on his hands and knees and blew a slow roller by Amos Otis foul, but the umpires ruled the ball fair. In 1983 he became the first American major leaguer to play in Italy, where he won a batting title with a .477 average. MLB Network premiered a documentary on him in 2015, Lenny Randle: The Most Interesting Man in Baseball. He died in Murrieta, California, on December 29, 2024. Arizona State inducted him into its sports hall of fame.
