1972 Topps #450 Mickey Lolich

About Mickey Lolich
Lolich won 22 games with a 2.50 ERA in 1972. In his final regular-season start he struck out 15 Red Sox, moving Detroit a half-game ahead of Boston. Topps featured him on first-series pitching leaders card #94 with Vida Blue and Wilbur Wood, strikeout leaders card #96 with Blue and Joe Coleman, and individual fourth-series card #450.
Mickey Lolich was born right-handed in Portland, Oregon, but exercises to strengthen an injured left arm after a childhood accident helped turn him into a left-handed pitcher. He signed with Detroit in 1958 and spent 13 of his 16 major league seasons with the Tigers. His route to their rotation included refusing a minor-league demotion and returning home, where a season with the Portland Beavers and advice from pitching coach Gerry Staley helped him gain control. Lolich won three complete games in the 1968 World Series, beating Bob Gibson in Game 7 on two days of rest to earn the Series MVP award. Away from the mound, he rode a motorcycle to Tiger Stadium and organized visits to Cape Kennedy for teammates during spring training. He finished his career with 217 victories and 2,832 strikeouts and entered the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1982.
