1972 Topps #611 Rich Reese

About Rich Reese
In 1971 Rich Reese hit .219 with 10 home runs and 39 RBI for the Twins. The Twins' front office had determined to return Harmon Killebrew to first base full-time that year, and Reese got 329 at-bats in 120 games. On July 9, 1972, he pinch-hit the third grand slam of his career, off the Yankees' Lindy McDaniel. His #611 card, in the fifth series, pictures him with the Twins.
Richard Benjamin Reese, a left-handed first baseman and outfielder from Leipsic, Ohio, played ten major-league seasons from 1964 through 1973, the bulk of them with the Minnesota Twins before finishing with a brief stint split between Detroit and Minnesota. Originally signed by the Tigers, he was drafted away by the Twins in November 1962 and spent five years working through their minor-league system, leading his league in fielding percentage in four consecutive seasons. Reese's best season came in 1969, when he hit a career-high .322 with 16 home runs and 69 RBIs in 132 games. He tied for the American League lead in pinch hits in 1967 and is a co-holder of the major-league record for career pinch-hit grand slams, with three. Over 866 career games he batted .253 with 52 home runs and 245 RBIs, and he appeared in the 1969 and 1970 American League Championship Series with Minnesota. After retiring as a player, Reese built a long career in the distilled spirits industry, eventually serving as CEO of Jim Beam Brands.
